How to remove pool water chlorine from your skin?

Swimming pools contain chlorinated water. Therefore, it is inevitable that you will be soaked in chlorine after swimming. Chlorine, while it is good for the hygiene of swimming pools, it is harmful to your skin and hair. If left unattended, chlorine can stay on your skin and hair for several hours after swimming, depending on how much chlorine was in the pool and how long you were in the water.

Problems caused by chlorine on your skin

Swimming in a chlorinated pool can cause skin problems such as irritation, dryness, and itching. In some cases, it can also cause a chlorine rash or folliculitis. Some people may develop rashes on their skin after swimming in a chlorinated pool. An allergic reaction to chlorine causes it. Symptoms include red, itchy, and raised bumps on the skin.

Another common skin problem after swimming in a chlorinated pool is the appearance of white spots on the skin. These spots are caused by the depletion of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our skin. Chlorine can bleach melanin, leading to the appearance of white spots. Besides, swimming in a chlorinated pool can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and flakiness.

Sometimes you could see red spots on your skin after swimming in a pool. It is caused by bacteria that enter the hair follicles and cause an infection.

Tips to remove chlorine from your skin

Showering with cool water and a gentle soap immediately after swimming can help remove chlorine from your skin. It is essential to wash your face with an anti-chlorine soap or a facewash rich in vitamin C after being in chlorine water. Chlorine can cause skin irritation and dryness, which can be particularly damaging to the delicate skin on your face.

Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face after swimming, and follow up with a hydrating moisturiser with ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, or coconut oil to lock in moisture and prevent dryness. You can also use a vitamin C serum to brighten and even out your skin tone.

Exfoliating once a week can also help remove dead skin cells and promote skin regeneration. Vitamin C is an elixir as far as removing chlorine from your skin is concerned. It neutralises chlorine. Ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate, both found in vitamin C, can neutralise chlorine. Using a water and vitamin C solution can go a long way in removing chlorine from the skin and restoring the skin's health.
