Field Hockey skincare 2023 : How to protect your skin year-round while playing hockey?
Field Hockey is a sport that is played outdoors, generally during the daytime. While the players are fighting their hearts out against each other on the field, they are also fighting against one opponent, which is common to both the playing teams. This opponent is none other than the sun. The brightly shining sun allows the game of field hockey to be played with ease. However, exposure to the scorching sun for longer periods is not healthy if requisite skin care is not taken. The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause tanning, burning, rashes, itchiness, ageing, and, in the worst cases, even skin cancer. Hence, it is pivotal to take care of the skin and protect it against the dangerous UV rays of the sun. So, how can you take care of yourself or protect your skin against the hurting UV rays? Here are a few tips:
Applying sunscreen
Sunscreen, also known as sunblock, is one of the best skincare products. Opt for a broad-spectrum protection sunscreen since it offers protection against UV-A and UV-B rays. It is best to apply sunscreen before you head outside at least 15 to 20 minutes before sun exposure because it needs time to soak in to be the most effective.
Zinc sunscreen
A zinc sunscreen is typically made from natural ingredients like zinc oxide (ZnO), a combination of zinc and oxygen. Zinc oxide's ability to block UV-A and UV-B rays makes it one of the most effective sun protection products for preventing sun damage. Some zinc sunscreens contain aloe vera, which enriches the sunscreen's natural qualities and adds an enticing aroma to the otherwise ordinary zinc sunscreen.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
Sunscreens are available in different SPFs (Sun Protection Factor) like SPF 15, SPF 30, SPF 50, etc. The SPF of sunscreen determines the percentage of protection offered by the sunscreen. For instance, sunscreens with SPF 50 protect against 98% of the harmful UV rays emitted by the sun, while sunscreens with SPF 30 offer protection against 97%.
Sweat-resistant
Sweat-resistant sunscreens get a nod ahead of the other sunscreens from athletes. While playing, the players tend to sweat a lot. A sweat-resistant sunscreen is therefore a boon since it does not get washed away with sweat.
Water resistant sunscreen
Choose a sunscreen that is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Since a game of field hockey lasts for 60 minutes, a sunscreen that stays on for 80 minutes can offer optimum protection against UV rays. Water-resistant sunscreens are the best for athletes who spend longer hours in the sun.
